ABC's Bachelor: Breeding Ground for Superficial Relationships or True Love?
By Miss TThis week, Jason Mesnick began his run as ABC's official Bachelor. A single-father of an adorable three year old boy, Jason has captured the hearts of many a lady.
I've been a "fan" of the Bachelor and Bachelorette series since good ol' filthy rich Andrew Firestone took the reigns. Primarily, I watched it because I honestly thought people found true love on the show (the whole love at first sight thing). Over time though, I've grown accustomed to following the show because I enjoy watching the women/men suck up and go out of their way to garner attention. Secretly though, I always find myself rooting for certain participants because part of me believes the people do grow fond of each other. After all, who doesn't appreciate a love story made public?
Still, strangers getting married after such a brief time period just doesn't seem to fan out for anyone. Look at the record - out of allthe shows, only Trista and Ryan have actually tied the knot. Even the beautiful and determined DeAnna Pappas couldn't make things work with her surprise choice, Jesse Csincsak.
Terrible, I know, but I can't help but wonder why people are drawn to these shows. Do watch ABC's The Bachelor/Bachelorette? Why? Are the Bachelor and Bachelorette any different from shows like AShot at Love, Flavor of Love, I Love New York and Rock of Love?

I can't watch shows like that. It turns love into something not as important and precious as it really is.
They're ridiculously unreal.
yeah, i think people watch for the same reasons the watch auto racing; they go for the train wrecks and to judge others after they've made themselves open and available to public scrutiny
I started watching it actually with my dad. Sadly we pick our top 10 and number 1 girl/guy and have a competition on who will win. Just for fun, no money. So I always watch the first 2 episodes to see who I'm choosing and whose still in it and then I wait a few weeks until the final 4 or 6 and then the finale.
I do watch hoping that out of all these trials that more will work out for the best. I believe that Charlie (the actor) and Sarah are still together... at least that's what the latest news was recently when Rebecca had her twins and named one of the kids after him. I really liked the two of them.
There have been a few seasons after their final pick that my dad and I will then say how long it's going to last before they split, which I'm usuallly right.
Hopefully this season brings good luck and love to Jason and helps with the ratings/viewings of the Bachelor.
I guess it's possible to find true love on a show like that..but I'm gonna have to say it's usually just for superficial relationships.
The only difference is they try to put a touch of class in the show!!
i think anytime they have "the bachelor" (one guy, lots of women) it's a DISASTER.
the show should ALWAYS be "the bacherlorette" (how in the world do you spell that?!?)
anytime you have several dozen women clamoring for one guy, it often becomes a game of who can be the sleaziest ho to close the deal. then in a showdown of the final 2, it's the lesser of two hos that prevails.
a more honest contest is to have several dozen men who have to prove they're the best, most sincere, strong, committed, loving, caring etc. to win over the woman's heart.
unfortunately that doesn't make for the good TV.
the show could still be called "the bachelor" (only it should always be ONE woman to win over, several dozen men fighting for that chance)
men fighting for a woman's honor = thumbs up
women fighting over a man = cat fight
I don't watch the Bachelor or the Bachelorette and honestly I don't think I ever have sat down and watched an actual season. I do remember Trista and Ryan and I praise them all the time because with all these shows on all these networks they are the only ones to have a successful relationship and start a family from it.
I mostly watch the VH1 shows just for entertainment because it is funny how dumb/skanky/ghetto some of the ladies actually are.
Most of the time it's quite embarrassing and you learn how not to be.
Most of the VH1 shows are fake anyway, you must think that. I mean if it really was real you would think the contestants would have some hand of picking the final set of girls or guys to go on the show. Anyway the point to my comment is that it's just mindless entertainment.
p.s. update: Jason is a hoochie. Sure, he has an adorable son but he's definitely handing out the kisses to whoever asks!
show's addicting but pretty pointless except for Trista!
i have this strong hatred of reality television
