  • The First Indian Wins a Golden Globe for Slumdog Millionaire

    By Mr. M

By now I'm sure all of you have heard of this little British film called "Slumdog Millionaire". This movie, with its tremendous critical praise and awards buzz, has really put India and its hard-working artists on the international map. And this is no small feat, because Indian cinema has been trying to get Oscar attention for so many years, and only three times has an Indian film been nominated for Best Foreign Language Film.

I don't know if you saw/followed the Golden Globes or not, but "Slumdog Millionaire" took home four awards (Best Drama Movie, Best Director, Best Screenplay and Best Original Score). The last one is the kicker. The score for this film was written by India's greatest composer, A.R. Rahman. His songs have been enjoyed by Indians for the last two decades and he is a musical genius. I think he also wrote the score for the "Lord of the Rings" musical in London as well as the short-lived Broadway musical "Bombay Dreams".

This is the first time an Indian actually won an American-based award and we're all really excited because this win increases Rahman's chance at the Oscars in February. Like I said, India considers winning  Oscars as reaching cinematic heaven.

What are your thoughts on the American appreciation of foreign films? Have you seen "Slumdog Millionaire" yet?
