The First Indian Wins a Golden Globe for Slumdog Millionaire

By Mr. MBy now I'm sure all of you have heard of this little British film called "Slumdog Millionaire". This movie, with its tremendous critical praise and awards buzz, has really put India and its hard-working artists on the international map. And this is no small feat, because Indian cinema has been trying to get Oscar attention for so many years, and only three times has an Indian film been nominated for Best Foreign Language Film.
I don't know if you saw/followed the Golden Globes or not, but "Slumdog Millionaire" took home four awards (Best Drama Movie, Best Director, Best Screenplay and Best Original Score). The last one is the kicker. The score for this film was written by India's greatest composer, A.R. Rahman. His songs have been enjoyed by Indians for the last two decades and he is a musical genius. I think he also wrote the score for the "Lord of the Rings" musical in London as well as the short-lived Broadway musical "Bombay Dreams".
This is the first time an Indian actually won an American-based award and we're all really excited because this win increases Rahman's chance at the Oscars in February. Like I said, India considers winning Oscars as reaching cinematic heaven.
What are your thoughts on the American appreciation of foreign films? Have you seen "Slumdog Millionaire" yet?

i havent seen this movie yet.
Slumdog Millionaire was the first movie I saw this new year and I seriously can not find any major faults to this movie. I highly recommend this movie for anyone who wants a funny, gritty, uplifting movie.
AMAZING movie. It was probably one of the best that I have ever seen.
I think I'm one of the rare few people who didn't enjoy the movie.
It was an amazing movie. It showed a very different side of India that most people normally never see. It was uplifting at the end, the characters were well developed, the soundtrack inspiring. It has been my mission to take all of my friends to see it and its won them over every time. If you haven't seen you, you must make a point to do so.
And hell yea for an Indian to win!
Its about time!
@storiesandsinker@xanga - curiously, why didn't you enjoy it?
Yeah, this is a huge deal! The music is amazing and the movie was so real!
I haven't seen Slumdog Millionaire yet but I'll put it on my must-see list along with Ploning - a Filipino film that is also vying for the Oscars.
I have seen it and it was truly entertaining and mindblowing. The film is a testament that the Indian film industry has more to offer than the usual melodramatic candy floss. They do actually produce quality movies with a well written screenplay and good film direction.
As part Indian, I am very proud of this film.
I saw it & loved it.
Loved it. My favorite film of '08, hands down.
My friend told me to watch this movie, so I probably will, sicne it does seem really intriguing.
My mother has been listening to compositions by AR Rahman for as long as I can remember.
I, however, do not get the appeal, (then again I was too busy listening to my 'noisy' music to care, lol).
