Miss T's Oscar Picks
By Miss TSo the nominees for the 81st Academy Awards have been officially announced here. I'm pretty excited. It's not that I'm lame and have nothing better to do (eerrrr) but I also absolutely love movies. I want to write one, direct one, be in one - you know, blow that cinema experience out of proportion.
For today though, I'll be a pretend judge/critic/psychic and guess who the winners would be.
Here are my picks:
Best Actor
Brad Pitt in "The Curous Case of Benjamin Button" - Although Mickey Rourke's breathtaking performance in "The Wrestler" is so natural and stirring, I'm going to have to go with the bronzed Brad "Achilles" Pitt. Anyone, who can portray a child in an old man's body and vice versa so beautifully, deserves to win. Throw aside the team Aniston hate (speaking to myself too) and appreciate his true and deep talent.
Best Supporting Actor
Heath Ledger in "The Dark Knight" - I'm a very sappy person and want him to get this award so bad. He obviously won't have another chance. And it's not like he doesn't deserve it! That accent, that crisp roll of his consonants, and subtle viciousness. Ledger's portrayal of the Joker was amusing, sure, but so inherently sinister and chilling that he made Laurie Strode want to run to Michael Myers for protection.
Best Actress
Anny Hathaway in "Rachel Getting Married" - I know we have a lot of Meryl Streep fans here and I sure love that Kate Winslet but I'm going to go with Anne Hathaway in "Rachel Getting Married." This movie truly affected me. It was not entertainment in the sense of a summer blockbuster but Hathaway's portrayal of a young woman struggling with her past and fresh out of rehab is just so touching and unadulterated. She seriously gave it her all.
Best Supporting Actress
Penelope Cruz in "Vicky Cristina Barcelona" - I was going to say Marisa Tomei for "The Wrestler" but she's already won an Oscar so I want to be fair. Penelope Cruz and her poignant flare all the way, baby. I've only seen a preview of Penelope portraying a flamboyant artist's insane ex-wife but she's remarkable. REMARKABLE!
Best Animated Feature Film
WALL-E - Seriously? Is there even any competition?!
Achievement in Art Direction/Cinematography/Director
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button - I compiled these all to save time. Hands down the Button mania has certainly stirred many movie-loving and life-loving souls.
Achievement in Costume Design
Australia (Catherine Martin) - Any dress that can amplify an already GORGEOUS gorgeous landscape and scene deserves an Oscar. Plus, lookie here. Romance! Hugh Jackman! ::Sigh.::
Best Original Song
"O Saya" from Slumdog Millionaire - My mom and I were literally dancing in the aisles. Everyone was. No one left even while the credits were rolling. This amazing movie deserves at least one Oscar (maybe more)!
Are you planning on watching the Oscars? What are your top predictions? Who do you really really really want to win? What about your pick for Best Picture - especially with so many worthwhile contenders this year?

I haven't seen any of these movies.
Many of the films listed I had and currently have NO Interest in seeing.
I am vastly disappointed to not see MORE of the Batman movie gaining awards.
Yes, Heath Ledger should win for his performance as the Joker...this is not a vote purely on the tragic outcome that this role played on his life and death, but specifically for the way he played his role. He made an otherwise, cartoonish character come to life and actually appear REAL.
I also felt that the movie in General was perhaps the best movie of 2008.
Saddly we are watching movies like "Milk" get all sorts of acclaim...again, this is a Gay Hollywood hilight and one that I absolutely find disgusting.
I hated Ledger's role in "Brokeback Mountain" and refuse to see that movie...just as I detest the concept of the movie and life of "Milk" but that is not for this forum. Suffice it to say, that those selecting the candidates have truly missed out on some great films.
By the way, a recent movie that I only discovered a few months ago is perhaps one of the best of all time...yet I saw very little acclaim for it.
"Reign Over Me" - Adam Sandler...This is one of my favorite all-time movies and the story of the love that two friends have for one another is amazing, and yet manages to stay Straight!!!
Okay...I'll get down off of my soap box.
i'm planning on watching the oscars, but i don't really have a preference on who wins what.
yea. I will be watching. hope that Ledger wins and Hathaway for Rachel Getting Married. wish Batman scored more awards though like best director.
The only reason why heath ledger would win would be because he died. Big deal. I don't think he was that great in the dark knight.
@addicted81@xanga - You hated Ledger in Brokeback Mountain without even seeing the movie? And is it safe to assume you have not even seen Milk either? Try watching the movie before you judge it, please.
Anyway, I would love to see Sean Penn win as best actor. He was amazing!
The Nolan brothers should have definitely gotten more nominations, as should have Sam Mendes for Revolutionary Road.
@for___sale@xanga - I happen to NOT care for the Gay and Lesbian lifestyle. I know, many have the 'Choice' to participate in that lifestyle, while many of us Choose NOT to participate in that lifestyle.
Look I have my faults, the most drastics is my own sexual perversions. I have to live with my own flaws, but I am willing to admit that they are what they are. I have no desire to ram them down other peoples throats. It's my respect of others that keeps me in the dark.
As for the acting performance of Ledger and Penn, that is another story, but what I don't like is the over zealous accolades and hype, the positive spin if you will, by Hollywood on this subject.
How would Hollywood act if there was a movie about a man who was torn between the gay and straight lifestyle, who after years of living the gay lifestyle, decided to leave and go straight? What about the intense turmoil that would follow to leave the gay community? The love and the support that he would have from the straight community as well as the shame that many would throw at him.
For a man to survive this and lead a life of love, honor and beauty by rejecting his old gay life.
Tell me, how would Hollywood respond?
Think back as well to the performances in the Mel Gibson moive "the Passion"...that was an extremely awesome movie with some of the most brilliant acting that I have ever seen...Yet some worked real hard to reject it.
That's oky, it is everyone's choice...as for me, I choose to NOT participate in "Brokeback Mountaing" or "Milk" both stand for something that I don't believe in.
I still question why I hardly heard a word about the movie "Reign Over Me" - Perhaps one of the top 5 movies to come out this Century!!! - Had they made those two friends gay, would it have gotten more attention?
