Do They Really Need to Show Nudity?
Best Picture nominee The Reader has been in the spotlight lately, and not just because the film itself deserves it. The film contains a lot of nudity and sex scenes in the first half. I saw this movie and I thought that the nudity was almost necessary to depict the lust-filled affair between main characters Michael (German actor David Kross) and Hanna (Oscar nominee Kate Winslet). It gave the film a sense of realism and maturity.
Plus, when I see a movie about an illicit affair that doesn't contain nudity, I usually think of it as a cop-out. Not because I want to see skin show but because when the camera and the actors are placed in a way that hides their bodies, it makes the whole thing look rehearsed. It makes the actors look like their performing for the camera. I like to think that the camera is just "witnessing" the characters' conversations. That's how I think about any movie.
I know some people aren't as accepting to nudity on film as I am. People in the audience surely weren't. There were some gasps and groans during the movie, as well as some comments afterwards. I can understand where they are coming from. I just think, however, that if the story is served by the nudity then it can only help the film, like in The Reader.
What do you think about nudity on film?

I think it's perfectly acceptable.
In fact, I find it silly how some people would find murder and violence and explosions to be completely acceptable in films, and yet completely freak out at the sign of any skin... I think violence is ugly, while nudity is beautiful.
Why hide something beautiful?
i think nudity should be used to express something in a film, and should be done right.
i cannot stand when it is used as a lure for men and really has no meaning.
ooh, the first post really sums up my view. couldn't have said it better :)
Go for it. Any filmmaker knows the difference between nudity that contributes to the storyline and just plain raunchy stuff. I trust that most movies I see will show the former, not the latter.
why not? it's rated R for a reason. We all know the anatomy of our bodies and of the opposite sex so why should it bother us that much? just be mature about it.
yes please
It doesn't bother me. My high school French teacher used to show us French films in class that had nudity (I doubt he was supposed to!).
What does bother me is that it's usually the woman who has to get nude. The guy, if he is naked, merely flashes a little butt-cheek and twists his neck at ridiculous angles in order not to show his bits to the camera.
doesn't bother me a bit.
It's pretty acceptable in this movie, but it depends on individual person, isn't it?
Okay, don't all movies have a rating before it starts? I don't understand why some people would be so surprised as to gasp and groan about it. It gave you a warning, so if you don't like it, go see a different movie. And please, if you were old enough to attend a movie like that, grow up. We've all learned about the "birds and the bees" and everything in between.
Ha, I saw The Reader with my mom...most uncomfortable movie experience of my life!
I'm not saying there's anything shameful about being naked, but at the same time, a movie doesn't need to have explicit nudity in order for it to be good. Sometimes there isn't even a point to it, it's just nudity for nudity's sake, or just a surefire way to make it a hit at the box office. In The Reader, the affair was a large part of the plot, but what I was really interested in was Hanna's trial and the circumstances surrounding it. I wish the film had expanded on that more.
Also, maybe I'm just sheltered but I was shocked to see that full-frontal male nudity is becoming more and more common. Yes, it's nice that women aren't the only ones baring it all anymore but at the same time, I still think there needs to be a line drawn somewhere. Pretty soon we could be seeing porn films in theaters.
I don't go to the movies to be sexually stimulated, I go for an interesting plot that will either make me laugh or make me think. Nudity may be a part of the plot but at the same time I don't think it will detract much from the story if it isn't there.
Nudity is perfectly fine to me, since I don't find nudity to be inherently sexual. It all depends on the situation. And sexual nudity doesn't bother me at all either.
it doesn't bother me. i'm not going to go and watch porn (no interest in it and do not encourage it), but this film was a great movie. it didn't overdo the nudity or include it in terms of stripping/prostitution. it was realistic.
love to see more male frontal in film.Iam strait woman with desire for hot naked guys.
I would rather see nudity over violence. Nudity is something we all have in common, you are naked underneath your clothes. Sex is a very taboo subject in America, whereas violence is constantly glorified in film. Which makes no sense to me, anyways I would rather see naked bums all over the screen than people's heads being blown off.
