  • Will Ferrell Is Not Funny, Why Do People Keep Watching His Movies?

Last week, I finally got around to watching Semi-Pro, you know the movie where Will Ferrell is a basketball player, coach, owner and musician (a horrible one at that).

I’m a huge basketball fan, so movies with the sport tend to entertain me, even if they’re bad.

But this movie was horrible, and Will Ferrell made it worse.  He wasn’t funny at all, and did stupid things that made him look like an idiot throughout the whole movie (might have been his goal)

Yet people still love his movies.  Everyone I talk to loves Will Ferrell.  I don’t understand why.

He hasn’t had a decent role since he played Chazz, the guy who picks up women anywhere including funerals, in Wedding Crashers.

He plays the same role in almost every movie, stupid guy doing stupid things that is supposed to make people laugh.

He doesn’t even do it in a way where I actually feel bad for him and end up liking him in the end.

For example, Steve Carell plays similar comedic roles as Will Ferrell but he’s always put in a position where we learn to love him in the end.

Look at his some of his major films:
    • Bruce Almighty – Jim Carey stole the movie, but it was Carell’s antics as the news anchor that gave us huge laughs, but we also felt bad for him and ended up liking him.
    • 40 Year Old Virgin – everyone in the movie ragged on him for being a virgin but in the end he finally finds what he’s been searching for his whole life and we feel for him.
    • Dan in Real Life –Many hated him for kissing and falling in love with his brother’s girlfriend, but we didn’t mind because he had such a hard life with his wife’s passing and raising three girls, we gave him a pass.
I know this rant isn’t going to make anyone stop going to see Will Ferrell movies, or his shows (he’s going to be on Broadway portraying former President George W. Bush), but I’d like to know why people find his movies so funny.

I for one don’t think Will Ferrell is funny at all, except when he was on SNL and in the movie Elf (favorite Will Ferrell movie).

Why do people love Will Ferrell movies?  Is he really that funny or am I missing something?

ugh, i hate will ferrell too. don't get his humor and he's not even good to look at.

You KNOW what it is.....writer's writing from other people's sites while using script pro...an OLD formula that's been done way too many times by people who do it BETTER.  The problem isn't him, it's the scripts he's being handed.  Lack of good editing and the rise of programs, such as Dragon Speak, along with overusage of TV infomercial-purchased Spy Ears on other people's accounts....well, it spelled the doom of great movie writing.  Take it from someone who really appreciates truly funny/weird people.  BELIEVE me, I perfected the poker face, but I don't always feel it necessary to use it.  Sometimes it's pointless.

I love Will Ferrel because he is a really talented individual. You have to be smart to catch on the humor, I guess you just cant find it. His humor isn't the obvious "hardy har har" humor. And he writes most of his plots and stories.

I have to agree with you, I've never understood the liking of this guy.  Only movie I can tolerate with him in is 'Elf' and it isn't even that good.  For me there's always been an art to slapstick, in your face, obvious gag comedy. The old school greats from Abbott & Costello, Norman Wisdom, Jerry Lewis right up to the likes of John Candy, Jim Carrey (to some extent but even he gets a little much sometimes) are able to make it funny.

However for me Ferrel, no matter how hard he tries, just misses the mark for me, so the jokes usually end up being eye rollingly bad or grotesque to the point where I have to switch off and move on.

It seems more and more in order for people to be funny they have to go for the sexual innuendo or toilet humor in order to gain a laugh, which merely raises questions about our intelligence.  Where has all the clever humour gone? Did it die with John Candy?

I don't like Will Ferrell at all. I agree that he isn't funny and think he is just annoying. There are some movies that could have been pretty good but he just ruined them.

I ABSOLUTELY CAN'T STAND WILL FERRELL!!

    Thanks you for this post!

It's relative to say that Will Ferrell isn't funny... but Semi-Pro was terrible, no matter who you are. Anchorman is his best movie (with a starring role) by far. Stranger Than Fiction isn't bad either. You get to see a "different" side of Ferrell, but he does throw in his usual antics in some places.

I think Will Ferrell movies are good to see once, and then never ever again. Although I do love Anchorman, but lo and behold, Steve Carell is my favorite character from that movie.

I recently saw stepbrother and thought it was kind of funny, but I would never pay to see it again, or even see it again fir free.

wow i'm surprised somebody finally came out & said it...sweet lord, so its not just me! i'm not one for stupid funny but i've come around to it a little - not enough to like will though. nothing personal towards him...i mean, Elf & Talladega Nights were pretty funny movies, i admit. but how he manages to *magically* lose his pants in every major role or tv spot or interview or basically any 30-second-op he gets in front of a camera - is beyond me. nobody wants to see (gag) - that. well no, must be im wrong, cuz apparently america does & thinks his near bare hairy behind is "hilarious." anyway, great post:)

hilarious site, lots of will ferrell stuff

  • TakingxOverxMe@xanga

I don't usually like Will Farrel, but he is actually really good in "Stranger Than Fiction."

  • black_lie@xanga

I actually hated Wedding Crashers, it was too misogynistic for me. Out of his funny movies, I like Blades of Glory or Anchorman. Too many of his things rely too much on dumb humor for me to really like him a lot. I liked him in Stranger than Fiction (not a comedy!) though.

The video clips he has online with his(?) daughter are also funny, but only because she is so damn cute.

  • tubbz87@datingish

has anyone seen Bewitched? i actually fell asleep 5mins into the movie.. good thing i didn't pay to see it. Steve Carell is definitely much, much better.. he always makes me laugh until i cry.

  • raved@xanga

All of his movies are the same.

  • CarmineKiss@xanga

cause people like stupid humor. i personally am not a fan of his and don't watch his movies. the first and only movie of his that i've seen was elf and it was horrible.

  • anonymous

yea he's terribly unfunny, i don't get his appeal, also a lot of his humour revolves around putting down other people which is the easiest comic form.....i love the comment from peacelove__CALLIE@xanga who basically called you an idiot...

'Don't mistake lack of talent for genius' dear

  • tama_starshine@xanga

Hm. Some people just laugh at people acting dumb. I laugh at almost everything, which is why I havent found a problem with Will Ferrell. Not *every* comedian/actor/actress is going to knock your socks off, thats just a given.
Now why doesnt someone write a blog like this about the Blue Collar Comedy Tour?

  • Keeping__Karma@xanga

No, I agree, he's a complete loser.  I think the last movie I actually like him in was Blades of Glory.  Although I did like Anchorman, I must admit.
He has his moments, but mostly I just ask myself if he's lost all intelligence.

  • angrymaggie@xanga

STRANGER THAN FICTION was a piece of art

he wasn't playing an annoying guy in it, for once

  • just_melmel@xanga

i'm not a huge fan of his, but he has his moments.

he had my dying in STEP BROTHER.

  • Theweddingblogger@xanga

It isn't always what he says that's funny. It's how he says it and his facial expressions.

  • Purrty_Pink@xanga

i love his movies. i think he is hilarious!

  • kleindazzle@xanga

    oh my bajesus.
