Bella and Edward: The Modern Day Equivalent of...

Okay, whether you love Twilight, hate Twilight or are indifferent to it, you cannot deny the fact that the Bella-Edward love story has become one that will go down in history. It has a large legion of devoted fans. It has some sort of element of danger. The two fell in love at first sight. And they are star-crossed lovers who technically have to "die" in order to be together forever.
Sound familiar? Well, Bella and Edward can be seen as a modern day version of Romeo and Juliet. They come from two opposing sides (Capulets=Humans; Montagues=Vampires). There is a better choice for the female (Jacob=Paris--even author Stephenie Meyer makes that connection in the 3rd book). Also there is some familial opposition (both Edward's sister Rosalie and Bella's father Charlie disapprove of their romance). The difference? Well, Romeo never was an active threat to Juliet's life. Well, maybe he could have bored her to death with his Petrarchan poetry.
So, Twilighters, here's my question to you: What great love story is the Bella-Edward love story most like?

I would have to say Romeo and Juliet, I have never thought about this until I saw this post. What about in Queen of the Damned, Lestat was a vampire and the girl wasn't so he was an immediate threat to her and she became a vampire so that they could be together. I haven't seen that movie in a long time so I couldn't go into more detail. Haha
Ehh, I dunno... Please don't compare Twilight to Romeo and Juliet. Even if Meyer does make the connection repeatedly in her books (and yes, I have read the whole series,) I don't think you could call Twilight an equivalent of the classic love story. They can be viewed as similar, but not the same.
For some reason this came to mind: It's kind of like saying Angels and Airwaves and +44 were modern day Blink 182. Sure the musicians carried out their instrumental places, and both continued to play Blink tunes at concerts, but they were just never as good as the original.
I did enjoy the Twilight story, I won't deny it, and A&A and +44 music was a nice treat, but I would never say they were equivalents to the classics.
I think the story is compared to Romeo and Juliet a lot because they (R&J) are the TRUE tragic (yet somewhat stupid) love story. At least Edward and Bella technically don't kill themselves over each other.....I mean, Edward is already dead and tries at one point to get the Volutri to kill/destory him....and Bella wants to become a vampire anyway....but they keep "living".
There hasn't been another story like Romeo and Juliet until now. Although you can still say Edward and Bella to people and they not know what you are talking about. Romeo and Juliet still win the award for "Most Tragic Love Story Ever".
There are other famous romantic couples too ---- Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth, Emma and Mr. Knightley.....literature just gives way to romance in a way that TV and movies can't.
The Titanic maybe...
I'm not saying it's completely original, but in my opinion it's one of a kind.
Most modern day love stories can be compared to Romeo and Juliet. Hey the majority of Bollywood movies are brown Romeo & Juliets too.
Actually, I can deny that it will go down in history.
As much as I am in love of the thought of someone like Edward, this Twilight craze is just a phase, nothing more than a fad.
Although don't get me wrong, I love the whole series.
paris wuz never a better choice than romeo @least not the way i red romeo & juliet paris wuz gross
Wuthering Heights? Both relationships are extremely dysfunctional.
I really hope Twilight is nothing more than a blip on the cultural radar. Either that, or I hope it goes down in history as one of the most poorly written/plotted books... ever.
Twilight, a hit? Yes. A potential classic? No.
I have zero interest in Twilight. But the couple...hm...not sure who they could be compared to. Definitely not Romeo and Juliet.
twilight will not go down in history bc while its interesting to read its horribly written and is made for entertainment
Twilight parodies R+J too much.
I read it, but I didn't like it. Yes, that's what being in love at 17 is like, but other than that ... I felt the ending in the 4th book was a cop out.
one of my friends said that it was like a titanic love story, but better, and i flipped at her because titanic is so much better than twilight in all aspects. director, actors, chemistry, plot line, special effects etc. ive never read twilight, but i thought the movie was good - yes, it was badly made, but it was cute ... but i dont think there's a comparision yet for twilight
@Mac_Libureet@xanga - I'm inclined to agree with you...
This is waaay off topic here, but why is Bella listening to her iPod when she's with Edward?
@legolas199354@xanga - Apparently you haven't seen the movie.
nothing new.... just the remix.
good eye~
Romeo and Juliet do not have an abusive relationship. Bella and Edward do.
It's sad that people even compare the two.
@LadyLibellule@xanga - hahah, wuthering heights. genius. and i hope so too.
Sid & Nancy.
Allie and Noah.. (the Notebook)
in a way..?
"Please don't compare Twilight to Romeo and Juliet."
Twilight is something that will pass (hopefully soon). It is poorly written, and the romance is... er... staring?
I'd compare the romance to goldfish in two separate bowls, staring at each other and forgetting 3 seconds later, to become fascinated again.
13 year olds who write fan fics could write circles around this woman. Deal people, stop glorifying this joke of a romantic book. Its like smut novels for people who aren't ready for the full harlequin books just yet.
They are definately a modern day romeo and juliet.
@depthof_pureblue@xanga - I agree with you.
@xSarah_Jane@xanga - No, I can't say that I have. It would be a lie...
