The Irony of Heath Ledger's Oscar Win

I'll start off by saying that I'm super glad that Heath Ledger won for the Joker. Even if someone else had won on Sunday night, I'm sure he would have said, "I'd like to give my award to the Ledger family" or something to that effect.

Anyway, I remember reading an article about the late Mr. Ledger in Entertainment Weekly that was a tribute to him a year after his untimely death 13 months ago. I can't seem to find it online but I remember reading it January 24th, 2009 so it must have been the January 30th issue. In that article, friends and family of Ledger talked about the actor, fondly remembering his unique approavh to stardom and the intensity of his work ethic.

I cannot remember exactly who it was but one of Heath's friends said that Heath hated being a star, he hated the praise. Apparently, Heath went into movies because he wanted to entertain people and the awards meant nothing to him. So I just find it ironic that this year people were obsessed with giving him awards for the Joker but he's the one actor who probably could care less about winning the statues. Not to say he shouldn't have won or didn't deserve to win.

Do you think that the Oscars are given too much importance in Hollywood? Do awards really matter?
