Nicolas Cage is a Genius
Nicolas Cage is one unique actor. His filmography is filled with trashy, B-grade thrillers where he saves the world or finds some secret treasure that once belonged to Sally Hemings. And it's not like he is a bad actor. He was marvelous in Adaptation and Moonstruck which are the two movies I like of his. But he just chooses these roles that require no acting skills and get no critical praise.
So why am I calling him a genius?
His movies make money. They're so popular with the audiences.. My entire family loves the National Treasure series, will probably love Knowing and any other similarly styled Nicolas Cage picture. And they're not the only ones. If you look at his movies in last few years, each one of them was in the top 5 at the box office, if not #1.
I mean, yeah, he has no credibility as an actor and his films have a short shelf life. But he makes movies to entertain the mass audience and isn't that was acting is all about? I'm not saying that Kate Winslet or Amy Adams should be his next co-star or that Hollywood should stop making meaningful pictures. But he gives the audience what they want and I can respect him for that.
What do you think about Nicolas Cage? Should there be more actors who make movies just to entertain?

Nicholas Cage is pretty cool. And, if I recall my movie history correctly, he is the person who convinced Johnny Depp to go into acting. So that makes him even cooler in my book.
Nicholas Cage may be a "genius", but he's an ass. My neighbor knows his family, and he ditched them when he got famous.
i love nicholas cage movies. its always the ones i like from national treasure to bangkok dangerous, i never miss any of his movies and i cant wait to watch knowing.
I'd be able to try and think more about him if you'd spell his name right. The confusion otherwise is just too much for my poor brain to handle.
He has no credibility? Really?
I think he's a marvelous actor. I love his movies. Matchstick Men especially stood out for me. And I agree; he does give the audience what they want. Bangkok Dangerous was okay...he did well, but the movie itself lacked a little something..
@NikBv@xanga - hahaha. cover the 'h' with your finger and see if your brain starts ticking again =].
no thanks, I'm tired of seeing his ugly mug. And I'm part of that sector of the population that prefers thoughtful movies to simply entertaining ones.
his name is spelled Nicolas. it's right there in the picture posted with the blog.
I actually refuse to watch any movie with Nicholas Cage in it. His face bothers me and I don't see him as a skilled actor. Maybe it's just me.
i havent checked that out yet, but i heard the movie was awesome! and nicholas cage is real good at doing action movies.
Nick Cage is really Italian hiding his heritage. I still think he's a good actor.
I love him! Oh, I've got the biggest crush on him. City of Angels and Con Air are my favorites.
the knowing was super :]
I've always liked him. I'd much rather see his half-assed films than any with guys like Tom Cruise (Vanilla Sky as the only exception) or John Travolta (what a fairy...).
I've seen most of his stuff, except Ghost Rider. I just couldn't....
He is one of the Coppola's but that shouldn't mean he's condemned to a life of critical acting. I watch all kinds of movies; some are deep and thoughtful stories, some are for entertainment only. I like them all. if you want to see him as somewhat of an actor, watch an old movie called "Peggy Sue Got Married". I liked 'City of Angels' too, but the ending pissed me off.
nicolas cage is the MAN!!
He might be a decent actor
but that movie...Knowing...was just terrible.
I cant believe i contributed to that crap movie being top in the box office
Ok, I don't usually respond to these types of questions, but this is something I was thinking about just tonight after watching a movie.
Lately, every time I watch a movie that is "meaningful" I end up depressed at the end. Â The only good thing about that is that my list of movies to watch when I really want a good cry is growing- but that's the only good thing about it. Â I mean, really... what's so bad about a happy ending? Â About an ending that the audience can walk away from with a smile on their face? Â Why does every single movie nowadays have to include premarital sex/adultery, foul language, drugs, abuse, etc. Â JUST BECAUSE IT HAPPENS IN REAL LIFE? Â Guess what? Â I'm not watching a movie to see things I can turn on the news to see. Â Because, you know, the news is free! Â All I have to do is pay my power bill and connect my TV cable, and there it is in streaming live video!
So, yeah, I like Cage's movies because they put a smile on my face and let me forget a little about the dreary reality of life. Â They let me recapture, for a moment, that part of my childhood which was convinced that the good guys always win, and that there really are mountains of treasure just waiting to be discovered. Â And that feeling makes me more likely to be patient when someone cuts me off in traffic, or there's a long line at [insert random place of business here]. Â It makes me more likely to leave a big tip when the service is slow because the restaurant is packed with diners.
Let's keep the happy endings, shall we?
It's insulting when people say he's a cop out ...beause his movies are not a++, but i think hes fabulous. He creates movies for the masses, not for his career. He's the smart one and none of his movies are bad, their actually really well done and interesting and historical, love it.
i have a standing philosophy to watch and enjoy any movie that has nicholas cage in it. Con Air, the Family Man, Lord of War, National Treasure, Next, Face/Off, I love it so much...
Personally, good actor, and quite memorable for film fanatics.
