  • Is There a Rehab for Twilighters?

I'm Juwon and I'm addicted to all things Twilight.

Let's get something straight: I never got into The Notebook and I don't care for the Jonas Brothers. But I love Twilight. So what? Well...I'm 23 years old. And I'm an English major who's supposed to look down on anything that wasn't written by Cormac McCarthy or Toni Morrison. So why can't I put these books down? Because they're good, that's why. Stephanie Meyer is a genius.

I saw the movie, like so many others, because I was curious. I didn't love it, but I was intrigued enough to buy the book. I got home from the store and settled in to read Twilight. And New Moon the next day. And Eclipse the day after that. By the time my friends got worried enough to check on me (I wasn't returning their calls) I was getting ready to head to Barnes and Noble to buy Breaking Dawn. They staged an intervention and took my debit card. But it was too late; I was too far gone. I spent the time between Eclipse and Breaking Dawn reading Midnight Sun. Now I'm rereading everything for the fourth time. They think I'm crazy but that doesn't bother me. They obviously don't get it; they haven't read the books yet.

Now I'm obsessed with all things Twilight.  Yes, the movie I originally thought was "blah" is watched all the time now. I've also watched the fanvids on YouTube, balked with everyone else at the casting of babyfaced Jamie Campbell-Bower as Caius, and bought the April issue of GQ just because Robert Pattinson was on the cover. There's no end to the madness; most Twilighters are ten years younger than I am! Most people think I need help; I tell them if Twilight is wrong, I don't want to be right. If I said I was ashamed, I'd be lying.

What about you guys? Is Twilight (or something equivalent) a guilty pleasure you don't feel so guilty about?

if there was, there'd be lots and lots of screaming

  • SuperSafe68@xanga

i tried reading these during my job at the bookstore. i use to really like reading fanfiction a few years back, but now, i can't even stomach to get through page eight of the novel.

the way the book is written, it describes things in a sensual way that it's almost addictive. add in teen angst, dreamed fantasy, and sparkling vamps, you probably could get a nice paycheck in two days.

honestly, there are reasons to hate/love this series to death, but i just put down the book slowly, and... walk away

  • Kristenmomof3@xanga

I read the books long before the movie. I liked them, but then I had to hear about it over and over and over and over because of the movie coming out. By the time the movie come out I was basically sick of the word Twilight because I had heard it soooo much. I will be honest though...I did watch the movie anyway. It was ok. The book was better.

  • Schristian@xanga

The books were shit, and Meyers is no genius. Her publisher is. They figured out a fantastic way to market a mound of literary refuse into a best selling series lauded over by morons. Period.

  • MangoWOW@xanga

Oh god. Those books are absolute crap. I tried reading through the first one. I almost projectile vomited with all the shit that came pouring out of the pages.
Maybe if these characters got personalities independent of their love lives I'd try it again. But until then, I'd rather use the book for something useful, like a doorstop.

  • inspireothers@xanga

i actually dont like it. i mean okay the description was pretty good but *shrug* im not those crazy fans, i honestly just skipped really quickly of Twilight. PS: New Moon, the sequel was filmed at my friend's high school LOL.

  • xxthatsmexx@xanga

It's a guilty pleasure to admit I liked the movie, but then again, that would be a lie.  The actors didn't sell it for me, but that's what I get for comparing it to the book - which is something I really shouldn't do.  The books are pretty good, but I only gawk and sputter in disbelief if anyone dares to compare it to Harry Potter.  What Edward represents is desirable, but Bella...all I can say is, I liked her best in Breaking Dawn, and even then, she wasn't my favorite heroine in the world.

It's nice that you're not ashamed, though.  I'll cross my fingers and hope no one gives you grief about it. =]

oh there's rehab lol. Go to intothetwilight.net and join their forum. That's my twilight rehab. We're pretty sure it's going to win a dazzle award for best twilight forum.

  • Angelina_Everlong@xanga

I can't say I get the whole Twilight thing myself.  But I know why I bought every Foo Fighters ablum multiple times, went to a show, memorized the band members' bios, and all that other stuff... tee hee :D

  • GreatBigSea_Fan@xanga

I've read all 4 books (which were amazing), but I personally don't get the hype about the movie at all. My best friend & I saw it back in November & we both HATED it. I'll re-read the books lots, but I refuse to pay anymore money on these movies, they sucked.

  • Shinbi_Belldandy@xanga

I love it. I love romantic supernatural books. I got a "talking to" from my boss at work because I wear my Twilight hoodie all the time & she says I cant wear a logo while on the clock (Twilight is also a time of day so WTF does she know? LOL). I met more people wearing that at work so I like it. It's amazing how something so simple is an ice breaker. Even for people who DONT like it. They'll say things like "I dont really get into that but..." & tell me other books or stuff they like & I find things in common there too.

Twilight is suppose to be some sort of new age tween p0rn with a male chauvinist twist. I haven't read the books or watched the movie but the vampire guy is quite sexy. there's nothing wrong with your obsession. I'm obsessed with johnny depp. some people look at me oddly since I'd choose johnny over someone like brad pitt.

  • TakingxOverxMe@xanga

    Genius?  Whaaat?

I used to like the books.  I thought they were decent..
But now, I'm over it and just want this Twilight shit to go away.

  • LadyLibellule@xanga

It's not a pleasure, guilty or otherwise.  Stephenie Meyer is nothing but a very lucky "writer" who likes writing down her fantasies about submitting herself to men.  It's scary when people go crazy over books that are full of chauvinism, gender stereotypes, self-inserts, thinly disguised pedophilia, whining, and adjective abuse and think they're actually good.

Happily ever after with no real climax and no sacrifices... how boring.

  • maniacsicko@xanga

    hahaha!!!!

    talking about new age addiction
  • anonymous

you say 'obssessed' like it's a bad thing...

    I
absolutely agree with everything you say, I'm completely addicted, and
I'm way past my teenage years. First I was disappointed by the film,
but now I love it, too. I read everything related to Twilight, I want
Midnight Sun to be finished and preferably all four books written from
Edward's point of view. also I'd like all four books to come out as
movies. You're not alone, baby. If you have a romantic side, you're
lost. Edward Cullen ist the most perfect male character I've read about
    since...well...Mr. Darcy.

  • Maroon_5_Best_Fan@xanga

    @Kristenmomof3@xanga - Agreed.

The books were so much better than the movie.
Though, if the movie weren't connected to the books, it wouldn't be so awful.
  • sailorsakura9@xanga

As long as you're not attacking people in the name of Twilight, then enjoy your guilty pleasure :p

  • Shopgirl0393@xanga

just saw the movie today and LOVED it, which i wasn't expecting!  now i want to read all the books!!

  • Izzy258@xanga

    yay English majors! =]

yeah, I hate that my teachers try to convince me anything not written by Chaucer or Shakespeare is a waste of my time.I liked the Twilight books, but I wouldn't call it an addiction.  I am hopelessly addicted to LOST, though.  I seriously go into withdrawal over the summer =]
  • Izzy258@xanga

    @UnpredictableIdentity@xanga - yeah, they're frightening in large numbers =p.

  • pillowpixies@xanga

I don't think Stephanie Meyer is a genius in the least. If you visit an online fiction website, where teenage girls (ranging from the age of 12 and up) write, you will find stories on the same level as hers, or better. When I first read Twilight (that's the only book I've read out of the series) I read it because I had nothing to read online. It was just like all of the stories I read online at the time.

Like Schristian said, they found an awesome way to market it. For another, Stephanie found the exact way to get a teenage girl revved. (Probably by reading fiction online.) Add sensuality to angst and you hit the jackpot.

I actually considered the book decent. Until I got utterly sick of hearing about it. Now it's like an ear sore that never goes away.

  • ichironin@xanga

    *sigh*

Unfortunately, I don't think they have a rehab for this.  YET.

I'm not exactly ADDICTED, per se...but as a guy...I get a lot of shit for having read them all.

    I don't regret it.

  • salenee_x3@xanga

I used to like Twilight, but I don't anymore. >___< Sorry, but I think it's over hyped & overrated.

    Guilty pleasure = Neopets.com .
When I'm feeling stressed or down, my pet's always calm me. Teheheee.
