  • I'm A Looker-Awayer During Gory Movies

I'm hoping I'm not alone in this. I have some very brave friends who can watch dismemberment, disembowelment, beheading, anything! and I can't stand it. When I know something gross is going to happen, I always look down, wait for the collective "EWWWWW" from the rest of the audience and look up when I assume the coast is clear. Sometimes I'm wrong and give a late "OMFG" of my own.

I think the movie I saw the least of was A History of Violence, which was a great movie, but as its title should have told me, it was also brutally violent. IMDB's got a parents' guide here that will fill you in on why it got its R rating, if you're curious. I didn't see most of the enumerated violent moments listed because I didn't want to look.

I'd like to be better about it because I think violence and gore can be constructive in a movie, but so many movies now use it gratuitously and it's not worth watching.

Are you a looker-awayer or can you sit through gross or violent moments?

Whenever I watch a movie and there's a scary/gory scene, I plug my ears with my thumbs and use the rest of my four fingers to cover my eyes.  Then, I hum to myself so that I can't ear what's happening.  My friends make fun of me for doing that though :(

  • echois23@xanga

I very rarely have to look away in a movie but once in a while I do.

  • Jenzies@xanga

I love horror movies...i don't look away but gory ones make me cringe slightly (and laugh too...)

  • xXnightshadeX@xanga

I'll cringe and go ewww, but I don't normally look away. Sometimes if it is really, really gory I will, but not usually.

  • awinnerisyou@hardestlevel

I usually just pass those movies up completely.

  • imyourstargirl@xanga

I can never look. Jeez, Saw was AWFUL for me.

  • soniaxx@xanga

Depends how gory. But I ussually look away since I start feeling a bit sick lol.

  • x__EMuhLEE@xanga

violent isn't bad, it's just kind of like real life and i guess i'm used to it. but gory movies, ew... gore is just gross.

  • MissPixieGlitter@xanga

aww, where's the fun in looking away?

  • TakingxOverxMe@xanga

I definitely watch all the gory parts.

  • laurenalissa@xanga

depends on what it is. if the person is dead i can watch but if the person is screaming in the background (think SAW 1-5) then i have to look away. i dont like to see people in pain. now if its really bad looking like Kill Bill i can watch those movies b/c the blood shown is not very realistic.

  • sarahflorida1085@xanga

i don't watch horror movies b/c i can't stand the gory parts and the absurdity of some of them...other movies, if there's violence, yes i look away if it's too graphic b/c i don't like scary things lingering in my mind, even if it's only fictional...it seems too real for me sometimes...

  • Fell_from_hell@xanga

i canNOT watch gory movies. i'll look away, cover my eyes. ANYTHING. but just scary movies are different i can tolorate them.

UGH. THE WORST MOVIE WAS ---THE DECENT!!! ---the one about the spelunkers it was WAY too aweful for me to watch. a group of friends and i went to watch that movie and my best friend and i were under our jackets talking the whole time. we couldn't actually watch any of it. our future boyfriend constantly made fun of us for that. haha. whateve.
  • xchinkylaydee@xanga

i'm both. it really depends on HOW gory it is.

  • a_single_raindrop@xanga

I look away. At any sign of scariness. During a commercial, trailer, anything (like the Drag Me To Hell commercial ahah) ... I'd rather not look than get nightmares or not be able to sleep. >.>

I am such a scaredy-cat. After watching The Reaping, I had to sleep in my parent's bed because I couldn't sleep by myself! :( hahah

  • sailorsakura9@xanga

I peek, especially if I know it's coming.  I never really completely cover-up my eyes, but there have been times that I have.  Then again, I'm not really a gore movie fan so it's not something that I do often.

  • methodElevated@xanga

I look away if I need to, but I tend to avoid graphic violence and torture porn.  It's not my thing, and it exacerbates my psychological illnesses.

  • lesprit__descalier@xanga

i love gore, but i can't stand scary movies. i think battle royale/kill bill/sin city/etc are brilliant, nevertheless unreal.

i can't stand it when i know something is going to pop out but it doesn't yet. for that reason, i've only seen a handful of scary movies in my entire life, and i cringe at any unexpecting scene in any movie. =)
  • Andrealana@xanga

I'm a total look-awayer. I watch scary/gory/horror movies with two fingers in my ears and the rest over my eyes. I hate them, so I'm not sure why I do it myself. Peer pressure!

  • Sugarling@xanga

I love that IMDB thing. 14 cases of the F* word. LOL SOMEONE DOES THAT!!!! I assume they get paid to study the movie like that.. but what if they aren't? Weird!

Oh and I can watch the gore.

  • justagirl_lostintranslation@xanga

I love movies like that (mostly..I refuse to watch any Saw movie)

I can handle a lot of gore..but when its just too much, I retreat into my bf's shoulder/chest...lol

  • merryhappylittlepink@xanga

I think I've gotten immune to gore after watching dozens of slashers every time they show on cable =/ I'm a girl and even my guy friends give kudos to me for only flinching rather than turning away when the gory parts came on. Oh sometimes I'll also laugh at the silliness of those scenes hahaha.

  • cra_z_gurl

u seriously hav 2 do somethin' about that. one secret is to look and forget. Look at the screen and forget what you just saw. that or b like me and love gore.

  • ShadesOfAnnie@xanga
    uh-huh

Trust me when I say I am a wimp about blood, guts, gore, etc. I have to look away at the "scary" or "gory" parts because I'll either end up getting sick or having horrible nightmares. Yes, at the tender age of 42.9, I am a great big wuss!

Wednesday, I was at a friend's house watching the Season Finale of Criminal Minds and the subject matter bothered me so much, I spent 1/2 the show (2 hours) either looking away or had my head buried in a game on my cell phone. Shivers.

So, to answer your question, when it comes to bothersome things on either tv or at the movies, yes, I am definitely a looker-awayrer!
